At Particularly Good Ltd, we grow only what we believe delivers the very best. That’s why we’ve chosen three standout varieties – Accord, Ramos and Markies – each with their own unique strengths, flavour and purpose.
From chip shops to restaurants across the UK, our varieties are selected not only for their taste and texture, but for how well they grow on our land, and how consistently they perform in the kitchen.
Here’s a closer look at what makes them Particularly Good:
Accord – The Early Starter (September and October)
Accord is our go-to first early variety – a fast-maturing potato with great uniformity and clean skin finish. It’s like a sprinter: ready early, delivers beautifully for new season potatoes, but not built for the long haul. Its creamy texture and light, buttery flavour make it perfect for roasties or mashed potato.
However, we’re honest about its role – Accord is best used early in the season, when it’s at its freshest and most flavourful. After that, we switch to varieties that can handle the longer race.
- Best for: Roasting and mashing.
- Texture: Soft and smooth.
- Taste: Mild and buttery.
- Why we grow it: It kicks off the season with reliable quality and flavour – ideal for customers wanting fresh, seasonal early potatoes.
Ramos – Big Potatoes, Brilliant Chips (November to April)
Ramos is known for producing large, uniform tubers with bright skin and a fantastic yield – making it a favourite for hand-cut chips and roasties. It has excellent dry matter and storage potential, delivering crisp exteriors and fluffy centres.
Ramos really shines in the core of the season, offering consistent performance and top-notch chip quality week after week.
- Best for: Chipping and roasting.
- Texture: Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
- Taste: Clean and neutral – perfect for frying or seasoning.
- Why we grow it: It’s reliable, high-performing and ideal for chefs looking for consistent quality through the bulk of the year.
Markies – The Late-Season All-Rounder (May to August)
Markies isn’t really a main-season variety – but it’s a star later in the year, just when other varieties are starting to tire. With high dry matter, golden fry colour and a famously fluffy interior, it’s a top pick for triple-cooked chips, roasties and baking.
Its ability to store well makes it a trusted end-of-season performer – perfect when chefs need quality that holds up right through to spring.
- Best for: Chips, roast potatoes and baking.
- Texture: Dry, fluffy and crisp.
- Taste: Subtly savoury – perfect for strong flavours or simple seasoning.
- Why we grow it: Markies delivers on flavour and performance when it matters most – helping us offer dependable quality late in the season.
Why Variety Matters
Wrong variety at the wrong time of year? You end up with disappointing potatoes. And that means fewer happy customers. That’s why we grow for timing, taste and reliability – choosing the right variety for the season to ensure the best possible eating experience. Get it wrong, and you end up with disappointing potatoes – and fewer happy customers.
Because they’re grown right here in Northumberland, we know our potatoes are handled with care, precision and pride.
“Great potatoes start with great varieties – and these three are our top picks for flavour, performance and consistency. Whether it’s a chef plating up for service or a family roasting potatoes on a Sunday, we’re proud to know our spuds are part of the story.”
